چکیده

The identification of alternatives to SF6 requires a study of the effective coefficient of electron attachment to electronegative gases and gas mixtures. One well established method for obtaining the attachment coefficient is the determination of swarm parameters using the pulsed Townsend discharge (PTD). From theoretical considerations and finite element calculations design guidelines for a PTD experiment are defined. Dimensions and properties of the setup are described. The setup optimizes the field homogeneity, the analogue bandwidth and the high voltage stability, and also includes a rear-illuminated photocathode. Currently a PTD setup with these optimized parameters is under construction.

ELECTRON ATTACHING PROPERTIES OF c-C4F8O DERIVED FROM SWARM PARAMETER MEASUREMENTS IN BUFFER GASES

Using the pulsed Townsend method the electron swarm parameters have been measured for c-C4F8O in buffer gases Ar, N2 or CO2 with mixing ratios ≤ 1.2%. The measurements were performed in a novel Pulsed Townsend experiment [1] that can operate with a high degree of automation. The evaluated parameters presented here are the effective ionization rate, the critical field strength and the electron a...

An Efficient Procedure to Identify and Quantify New Molecules for Insulating Gas Mixtures

In this contribution, a new procedure to systematically identify and quantify novel molecular gases with low global warming potential for application in high voltage insulation as gas mixtures is presented. The attention is focused on highly efficient procedures to be able to scan a large number of candidate gases. To identify new molecules, we derived an empirical correlation between the elect...

Role of electronegative gas admixtures in streamer start, propagation and branching phenomena

A critical analysis of photoionization as the major process for seed electron production ahead of the cathode-directed streamer has been made. The accumulation of O2 ions between pulses and fast electron detachment in an electric field could be an effective source of seed electrons for repetitively pulsed discharges in electronegative gases. Measurements and two-dimensional calculations in the ...

Pulsed plasma etching for semiconductor manufacturing

Power-modulated (pulsed) plasmas have demonstrated several advantages compared to continuous wave (CW) plasmas. Specifically, pulsed plasmas can result in a higher etching rate, better uniformity, and less structural, electrical or radiation (e.g. vacuum ultraviolet) damage. Pulsed plasmas can also ameliorate unwanted artefacts in etched micro-features such as notching, bowing, micro-trenching ...

Obtaining Electron Attachment and Ionization Rates from Simultaneous Analysis of Electron and Ion Swarms in a Pulsed Townsend Setup

We present a procedure to obtain electron attachment and ionization rates in a pulsed Townsend experiment. Temporal drift currents for electrons and ions are analyzed using electron and ion current models. Measurements are performed in a highly automated pulsed Townsend setup in CO2 to determine electron attachment and ionization rates as well as ion drift velocities of positive and negative io...
